Stirring mixing refers to the operation of agitating a liquid to cause it to circulate in a certain manner, thereby uniformly mixing the materials or accelerating physical and chemical processes.

The applications of agitation in industrial production are:
1. dispersion of bubbles in a liquid, such as air, dispersed in a fermentation broth to provide oxygen required for the fermentation process;
2. dispersion of the droplets in a liquid which is immiscible with them, such as oil dispersed in water to form an emulsion;
3. suspension of solid particles in a liquid, such as adding a pigment to a resin solution to prepare a coating;
4. mixing of the mutual solution, such as diluting the solution, or accelerating the chemical reaction between the mutually soluble components. In addition, the agitation also enhances heat transfer between the liquid and the solid wall and allows the material to be heated evenly.

The method of stirring is mechanical stirring and air stirring. The movement of the liquid in the agitation tank is divided into an overall flow and a turbulent pulsation from a scale.Glass stirred reactor is mechanical agitation.

The flow rate of the overall flow is called the circulation amount, and increasing the circulation amount is beneficial to increase the degree of blending of the macromix (see the degree of mixing). The intensity of the turbulent pulsation is related to the velocity of the fluid as it leaves the agitator. Strengthening the turbulent pulsation is beneficial to reduce the separation scale and separation strength. Different processes have different requirements for these two flows. The dispersion of droplets and bubbles requires strong turbulent pulsation; the uniform suspension of solid particles depends on the overall flow. The distribution of energy on these two flows during agitation is an important issue in the design of the agitator.
 
When the mixture is stirred, the density difference, viscosity and interfacial tension of the two phases have a great influence on the stirring operation. The smaller the density difference and the interfacial tension, the easier the system is to achieve stable dispersion; the greater the viscosity, the better the formation of good circulating flow and sufficient turbulent pulsation, and consumes a large stirring power.
